Piercy&Company’s MIPIM AR Future Projects award winning project, SymHomes in Restello, Kolkata is on site with work progressing quickly. The super-structure has been installed with the sub-structure and floor plates nearing completion.

The apartment scheme is pioneering for its use of steel in an Indian residential context and features contemporary living spaces enveloped by a permeable and responsive outer skin of opening steel panels. The outer perforated panels will help to cool the building by maximising airflow and shading whilst also providing a screen during torrential rains. This environmental buffer zone aims to condition the climate naturally, minimizing the use of air-conditioning units.

The project is the outcome of a Living Steel competition aimed at promoting sustainable steel housing in Kolkata.

Work is expected to complete on site in the autumn of 2013.

We are pleased to release images this week of our design for the International Presbyterian Church in Ealing, West London. The proposed design seeks to create an extremely flexible layout while retaining a spiritual spatial experience and a civic presence within the community. A folded surface articulates both internal and external forms, becoming spire like along the street to express the entrance to the church.

While our design is unmistakably contemporary it is rooted in vernacular forms and materials. The rusticated masonry walls form a solid base from which the dynamic brass shingle tile roofscape springs. The rich tone of the brass adds warmth to the church and matches the tone of the local houses. The folded form creates a much finer grain building and refines the overall massing which reflects the local character.

Piercy&Company has secured planning permission for four contemporary terrace houses within the North End Conservation Area in Hampstead, London.

The articulation along the footprint ensures that each house is identifiable and the feel of an apartment building is avoided. To harmonize with the neighbouring houses the roof is set back from the north elevation and is pitched along the western and northern elevations of each house.

The location of the site within the North End Conservation Area demanded a contextually responsive design. Accordingly, the materials, detailing and composition of Hampstead’s fine examples of Arts and Crafts houses are re-interpreted by Piercy&Company, creating a contemporary design inspired by Arts and Crafts materials and composition.

Piercy&Company’s Wakefield St Townhouses in Bloomsbury, London have been shortlisted for the Brick Development Association’s 2012 Brick Awards.

Wakefield St Townhouses, three bespoke townhouses completed early this summer for clients Great Marlborough Estates, have been shortlisted in the Best Housing Development – 1 to 5 Units category.

The use of brick – a traditional facing material seen in various guises throughout the Bloomsbury Conservation Area– helps achieve a familiar domestic skin, rich in texture and variation; ultimately enabling the contemporary building to integrate with the surrounding established urban grain.

The winners of the 2012 Brick Awards will be announced in London on 13th November 2012.
