This facade design for a £51m residential block in the 2012 Olympics Athletes’ Village wraps up accommodation for 268 Athletes or 8 townhouses and 30 apartments post-games. Richly etched and patterned, the reconstituted stone facade responds to both the efficiency and economy of the apartments within and the celebratory nature of the Olympic event. In collaboration with Niall McLaughlin Architects and Glenn Howells Architects the building is designed to Code 4 CSH, NHBC and Lifetime Homes standards.
The facade patterning drew upon one of Eadward Muybridge's 19th Century photographic investigations into human movement, the Running Man. Piercy&Company abstracted Muybridge's stop action photographs into a pattern that ripples across the building's facade, conveying a sense of motion and movement.
